Sigrid is a German-Australian who was born in 1939 in Königsberg and became a refugee at age five. Sigrid’s dream was to become an artist, however in order to ensure a steady income her family decided that nursing would be her chosen career path. Having completed her qualifications and worked for two years, she migrated to the USA where she continued working as a surgical nurse. In her spare time, she attended evening classes for drawing and painting. After two years, Sigrid left America and headed to West Africa for a nursing role where she met her future husband Hans-Jürgen Kubitz. The newly married couple were both driven and decided to save money for further education and eventually moved back to Germany where Sigrid attended the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany.
In 1968, the couple migrated to Melbourne, Australia. Whilst waiting to be accepted as a qualified nurse in her new country, she worked in a factory and enrolled herself in RMIT, where she attended painting and drawing classes in the evening. Fortunately for Sigrid, she very quickly received the good news, that the nursing council had reviewed and approved her international nursing experience and she was able to work as a theatre sister in a very large hospital. The earlier than expected acceptance of her role meant that Sigrid had to quit her art studies to ensure that she could meet the shift times in the hospital.
Whilst much of Sigrid’s working life was dedicated to her nursing career and family, art has certainly been a passion that has followed her throughout her adulthood. Sigrid’s art career includes 16 solo exhibitions, 47 selected international group exhibitions in countries such as Japan, Korea, Brazil, the United States and various European countries. Much of her artwork is further mentioned in newspapers, journals, books and catalogues around the world.
In 1985, Sigrid authored the book: ‘Adventure into new Art Techniques and Paper Making, Gum and Paper-Bark Trees’ (ISBN 0959015809: Initial 9 Publishers). The book featured her own technique of incorporating Australian botanicals and graphics into two and three dimensional organics works that were unique. The layout, illustrations and photos for the above book were all provided by the artist.
. Sigrid is also the author of the books ‘Das weiße Huhn’ (ISBN 978-3-8280-3265-1) and ‘Pioniere der Bong Mine – verliebt in Liberia’ (ISBN 978-3-00-059494-6) plus numerous short stories and anthologies. Sigrid also illustrated a book for Author H. Rauschenbach (ISBN 3-7921-0329).
One of her career highlights was the commissioning assignment to design and create the bronze medallions and trophies for the Walter Schäuble Ethnic Broadcasting Foundation. The awards were presented to eleven media presenters as a Pursuit in Excellence for Ethnic Television and Radio broadcasting in 1987 and 1988.
For both artistic and authoring endeavours, Sigrid has used different pseudonyms, namely: SK, SLK, SRELK, Sigrid Kubitz, Sigi Lankau, Berding and Sigrid Lankau-Kubitz.
